My Grandpapa lives in a wonderful house
) h: l# w$ e+ b v With a great many windows and doors, |/ E# k6 j+ w% L: @ i- w
There are stairs that go up, and stairs that go down,3 }0 ^. u" p5 m# t# M. @$ A
And such beautiful, slippery floors.8 e" D% y7 `# M4 N, }" E1 }% t
But of all of the rooms, even mother's and mine,; c( W) g$ w* i7 J
And the bookroom, and parlour and all,

Because of its ceiling and wall.
/ P! R( ^) a# J2 s: {& B Right over your head is a funny round hole
4 ]3 k. B% w# v$ _: [ With apples and pears falling through;
% T# Q( Q: A# J) k There's a big bunch of grapes all purply and sweet,
! o2 X$ p& a! A1 m) N And melons and pineapples too.- Y( \3 b5 t; }4 S( h* q
They tumble and tumble, but never come down+ f7 F* e0 J8 M# }5 R+ Q3 I
Though I've stood underneath a long while
3 J' h7 J2 ~+ V# g9 |) V With my mouth open wide, for I always have hoped
5 R/ }. N( p$ Z# ^$ p3 c6 e Just a cherry would drop from the pile.
5 {/ I' V2 i: \ [3 [ No matter how early I run there to look
# T% U/ ?4 A" m# P It has always begun to fall through;
6 y& L; z3 C3 r6 E# h& R% q And one night when at bedtime I crept in to see,
! j. T) H- J8 s2 i4 H/ i/ x It was falling by candle-light too.% O; l9 x% ^- m* ^
I am sure they are magical fruits, and each one3 g8 ~) c0 X6 D/ ^1 G
Makes you hear things, or see things, or go
: _4 D" Y- }, x3 d+ K) s Forever invisible; but it's no use,
- F6 x% n: Y F4 l7 I And of course I shall just never know. x% b( G' t9 A3 d6 P' }/ U2 W& ]
For the ladder's too heavy to lift, and the chairs. H. Q" q+ y L5 |
Are not nearly so tall as I need.
1 G8 }2 Q, H6 X( R9 @4 } I've given up hope, and I feel I shall die- @" ?3 o2 O* L
Without having accomplished the deed.
3 _- a1 N- \$ t It's a little bit sad, when you seem very near
2 y3 g3 x9 F! [; Z( x& A& E! A To adventures and things of that sort,
% l: g' l' M# g( ?* v. C Which nearly begin, and then don't; and you know
6 J, w! `& Q" y0 ~3 x2 S It is only because you are short.; Y. m* K2 f( s c
